Your Support Helps “Break the Silence” 2012 #ovariancancer

Last year was the first year G rolled with us for the 4th annual Run/Walk for the NOCC Rhode Island chapter. She was not yet one so I pushed her along in the BOB stroller on that HOT September day. Its a 5K so it wasn’t too long of a haul and walking around Roger Williams Park is pretty that time of year.

I walk in memory of “Va-Va” my godmother & aunt, a nurse, mother, grandmother, wife, and great friend to many. She was so very young {60s} when she passed of this silent disease, only 5 years ago this November. We have such a great time walking, raising awareness, and honoring her memory. Our family has walked each year since the Rhode Island chapter was formed.

About Ovarian Cancer
More than 20,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and approximately 14,000 women die annually from the disease. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed late when prognosis is poor. However, if caught early, ovarian cancer is over 90% treatable. It’s imperative that the early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer are recognized not only by women, but their loved ones and the medical community as well. There is currently NO early detection test for ovarian cancer, nor is there a vaccination to prevent the disease. The key to early diagnosis is awareness.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
Potential signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer:
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often

If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician.

The Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer is the largest fundraiser and awareness event for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Organized by local Chapter volunteers, this event celebrates our survivors, remembers those we’ve lost to ovarian cancer and increases awareness about ovarian cancer.

  1. I will donate. Can you email me the exact link? The one above doesnt have you listed as a participant so I want to make sure:)

  2. I will participate in a similar event called the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers taking place in my native Toronto this weekend. I think the support of any such initiative is of paramount importance in the war against cancer and it can help a great deal when it comes to raising awareness all around the world.
