Traveling with the Dude…Rhody

So you might know by now that we live in New York, but are from Rhode Island. Its not a far car ride. Just about 2.5 hours or so. Well, we took Rhody with us for the first time on the “big trip” back in November for G’s 2nd birthday party. It was all good at first, but then poor guy got car sick. ๐Ÿ™ Luckily he was in his crate, but it broke my heart and we had to pull over a couple of times to clean up and make sure he was okay.

On shorter trips, like to the vet, he rides on mine, or T.J.’s lap and doesn’t mind the ten minute drive at all. No car sickness.

This is all very new to us. Our other Golden, Lucy, LOVED the car. I mean, we would have to spell it out in conversation with the hopes she wouldn’t get excited. If we said , car, she would bolt around the house, tail wagging and panting. We are totally those people who take our dog everywhere we go. Vacation, visiting, the end of the street for milk. Yea, those people.

I am really hoping this is just a phase that he will grow out of. I mean, he’s just a bit over 5 months, so maybe its just puppy anxiety? It just breaks my heart to see him get sick like that. And, it usually messes up his belly for at least a couple of days.

Well, we are driving back to Rhode Island this Friday for the Christmas holiday and I am already feeling anxious about the car ride. We don’t plan on feeding him breakfast Friday morning, but beyond that we aren’t sure how to ease his tummy or nerves.

If you have any suggestions I am listening!

  1. Awww poor Rhody! Have you ever tried Melantonin? For Rhody, I mean. When my Titan is super anxious or if major thunderstorms, I give him melatonin to calm him down. It’s perfectly safe. People use it for separation anxiety, hyperactivity, thunderstorms, etc., because the melatonin calms them down. Usually puts him to sleep within the hour. Just a thought.

  2. With my dog, Marcos, it’s a fine line to cross. He’s fine for a five mile drive to the park or to accompany me on an errand but when we drove 20 miles to visit friends for a respite from Hurricane Sandy’s power outage, he did throw up – in the rear section of my new mini-wagon!
Since, like Marcos short rides seem to be okay for Rhody, perhaps you could stop a couple of times. I know it’s only a two and a half hour trip and it will be cold – but if it were me I’d prefer that to cleaning out his crate.

  3. Oh my goodness he is ADORABLE – I have a Golden Retriever too and he got car sick on the ride home when we first picked him up at the breeder’s! Ask your vet about Benadryl to calm his nerves and his tummy. I hear you can give a puppy this human medicine. It works for my kids when they feel sick on airplanes!

  4. The poor baby. Definitely ask your vet for something you can give him to calm the nerves.

  5. I wish I had some advice for you… ๐Ÿ™ but I don’t… I would talk to the vet, maybe they can help with something to relax him. Good luck!

  6. Awww, what a cutie! Did you ask the vet if you could perhaps do a mild sedative? I wonder if he’s getting anxious or it’s just motion sickness. Can you give dramamine to dogs? ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I have no tips, but he’s so cute!

  8. awwww, no suggestions but he’s absolutely adorable! Our cat comes with us too and sometimes gets sick ๐Ÿ™

  9. Oh poor Rhody! I wish I had advice:( I never had a pet:( So, are we going to meet up here. Can I see you?

  10. We give benadryl, but our pup outgrew the car sickness eventually! Keep lots of paper towels on hand while driving ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Awww.. Rhody is ADORABLE. I think all the suggestions above are great ones. I don’t have a dog right now, and our last one was OK in the car, so I can’t suggest anything. However, everyone else seems to have good ideas and I would even ask Jane Couto, too, b/c she has 4 dogs and travels with them in the car quite often. Good luck!!!

  12. Your puppy has gotten so BIG!!! Good luck with the travel.
