Maternity Pillows: A Love Hate Relationship

So, when I was pregnant with G it was seriously the hottest summer EVER! Adding another thing to the bed while I tried to sleep was not my idea of a good time since I just imagined sweating. T.J. is a furnace and we have a queen sized bed. Even with the air conditioning blasting the summer of 2010 I was sweating. We already have four pillows on the bed and adding another GIANT one can get tricky and make it even hotter.

I tried several pillows over those 9 months. My sister in law was pregnant with twins that same summer so she suggested this pillow: The dreamgenii. I wasn’t impressed. You prop yourself on-top of the middle section {quilted pod} and then wrap your leg around that long part. Since I tend to get restless leg syndrome during my pregnancy the leg support didn’t help at all. It wasn’t enough of a pillow to provide support between my knees. The only good thing about it, for me, was that it doesn’t take up a lot of room in the bed. Meh. 🙁

The next pillow I bought was the Boppy Prenatal Total Body Pillow. Its GIANT! Took up quiet a bit of space in the bed, but I found it to be very comfortable. I liked that the cover is machine washable although kind of a project to get it back on. I didn’t get this pillow until the end of my pregnancy, but I do remember really feeling comfortable during the night. I did flip flop from one side to another while I slept and this meant the pillow came with me. Usually that meant I woke T.J. up because he just got a beating from the pillow. LOL After G was born I had this pillow in the hospital with me and it was perfect for nursing or having her sleep on me while pretty well supported. Maybe I’ll get this one again?

So, what kind of maternity pillow did/do you use? Some of my friends like the wedge which just supports under the belly area, but that won’t help my legs. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! 🙂

  1. Funny, 9 years ago, the only thing I found on the market was just a long king sized pillow. The options now look much better

  2. I have a regular body pillow and do not like it. It’s too puffy and it takes up a ton of room. I use it if I’m desperate because it’s helpful with leg cramps. I do hope you find a pillow that’s not as cumbersome!

  3. I’m interested in reading the responses here! I’m not pregnant, but I hope to be soon, so I’m going to be soaking up all the advice from recently pregnant/pregnant mamas!

  4. Brad got me the one from motherhood maternity….I can’t remember the exact name but it looks like a big candycane and I loved it!

We too had a queen when I was pregnant w Breanna and not to mention it was super high off the ground that was a blast trying to get into bed 8mo pregnant lol

  5. Snoozer full body pillow!!! That’s what it’s called

  6. I got the Snoogle with Aubrey and already busted it out. It looks similar to the top one but the leg pillow seems thicker (since you said that one wasn’t). I only slept with the long part wrapped behind my back. I tried “flipping it” to have it support my stomach late in the pregnancy but it was too tall and so uncomfortable. I ended up using a down pillow fo runder my stomach since it was much flatter.

  7. THE SNOOGLE. PERIOD. I am a mostly stomach sleeper, this “s” shaped pillow allows you to rest bump on it, wedge between legs and prop behing back to keep from back on your side. I hate sleeping on my side esp when pregnant…it hurts my hips and hip flexor muscles. This alleviates all hip pressure. Although, this third time around I haven’t busted it out yet with only 7 weeks left! I’m digging it out tonight, thx for reminding me!

  8. I just used some of my many regular pillows and one body pillow. I had sciatica problems as well, I was like the princess and the pea.

  9. I never used a pregnancy pillow. They all looked funny to me! I did make my own “pregnancy pillow” by intertwining a few of my own!lol!

  10. To be honest, I have never used a pregnancy pillow! Not with this pregnancy or with my first. I sometimes stick a small pillow between my legs, but that’s about it!

  11. I used the wedge pillow, so I’m not much help!! Towards the end of my pregnancy with J I combined the wedge with a regular bed pillow between my knees because my back ached so badly. Good luck mama!

  12. Good old fashioned body pillows!!! I still use one today actually. I could never get comfy with the fancy ones. Good luck!

  13. I used a pillow between my knees and slept on my side. It gets SO uncomfortable. I don’t miss that!

  14. We bumped up to a Cal King during my 2nd pregnancy for this very reason! I flip flop a lot, so the giant pillows were hard to roll with me. I bought a TempurPedic body pillow which was perfect, not too big, held it’s shape really well, and went with the new mattress we bought. Seriously, that TempurPedic mattress was my “push present” since it made such a difference!

  15. great , thanks for sharing

  16. This would have came in handy when I was pregnant with my son. I could only sleep on my side, which was an awful change from always sleeping on my tummy. I think these pillows are very helpful for many reasons during the pregnancy.

  17. Wow……this is great. Thanks a lot for sharing.

  18. This full body pillow is just awesome. Thanks for sharing.
