Anthony’s First Day of PreK 4
Oh man guys. Anthony had a couple of hours of school Wednesday to ease back into the groove. His preschool likes to stagger the kids in bit by bit since it can be so overwhelming for the little ones. Ok, and maybe us Moms too. This weeks heatwave has been insane here too so I was glad to have him home and keep him cool.
He went to preschool two days a week last year and was totally fine about it. There were a few hiccups here and there when he wanted to stay with me and of course that was heartbreaking. He eventually made some friends and was excited to see several of the same familiar faces in his class again.
When I picked him up Wednesday after his shortened day he kept asking when he would return. I told him Friday he would have a FULL DAY (9am-1pm) of school and he was going to even eat lunch there before I picked him up! He was SUPER excited about it so much so when we got home he asked me where his lunchbox was so he could set it on the counter where I line up the lunchboxes at night.
Packing this guys lunch this year is going to keep me on my toes! He loves a peanut butter sandwich (no crust) or hummus with tortilla chips, a slice of American cheese, chips, baby carrots, and an apple or grapes sliced up. No peanuts or hummus allowed! Of course I can pack him warm foods in a thermos so I’m gonna try mac & cheese, meatballs, or chicken nuggets next week. But the sandwich is so easy! Today I made him a bagel toasted with butter – lentil twists – sliced apples – a fruit and cereal bar. I wanted to see how much he could eat in the time he was given. So he gave me some feedback today about what he liked and what he saw his friends eating. Think he will be OK using a pink and stainless thermos or should I get him his own? HAHA!
He has more or less been carrying around his little Skip Hop backpack since we went to Florida in July. He takes all his important things with him wherever we go and I’m fine with that! So, he was pumped to pack up his backpack this morning alongside his sisters. He even toted it out with us when we waited with Gabriella and Valentina to get on the bus. I knew he would be just fine today.
So here we are today, his first full day of school. He had a great day and I was so excited to see his little face looking for mine at pickup time. I don’t think it actually hit me that for the first time I was alone without a kid at home. I remember looking back in my van while waiting for the light in the parking lot of the school after drop-off and thinking how strange it was to have an empty car. Sure, I go places alone, but this was a different alone.
After I dropped him off I had to quickly get to a PTO meeting that lasted a solid two hours. So, that kept my mind off the realization that all my kids were in school at the same time. When I came home after my meeting to an empty house it was shockingly quiet and still. Even my dog Rhody looked at me like, “where is everyone”?
I made myself a little breakfast/lunch because my busy morning that started WAY TOO EARLY before 6am had left me without getting a chance to eat. I folded a basket of laundry that was sitting in my laundry room for two days. I brushed and curled my hair – hadn’t done that in months. And then I had just enough time to get back in the van to go pick Anthony up for 1pm.
Four hours of alone time surely does go by a lot faster than when the kids are home. Or at least it seemed like it did.
This year could easily be Anthony’s last year of preschool. He has the same birthday month as my oldest, November and she stayed on for an extra year of preschool. She was in a very different place than he is now, but if he stays strong on this path of his he will be getting on the bus next year along with his sisters. Kindergarten! That totally freaks me out. He will be FOUR in November. I really feel like he was JUST born and yet here he is in the same class his sister Valentina was just last September.
Is it weird that I’m glad for another three day weekend with the kids? Yep, they have Monday off and I’m ready to fill this weekend up with FUN! Have a great weekend!
