I came upon this craft via Pinterest and I couldn’t wait to try it. Since it’s Fall and all and I LOVE cinnamon I couldn’t resist my house smelling yummy. And, why not turn on the oven, there is a chill in the air and it makes the house all toasty. Also, I’ve been looking into natural ways of scenting the air in my house. I am not into plug-in scent warmers, fake candle scents, or room sprays.
So with that said, if you have 5 minutes and 3 ingredients you are in the cinnamon applesauce ornament business!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup cinnamon (I bought a huge container at BJ’s Wholesale Club for $2.49)
- 4 tablespoons of Elmer’s Glue
Method:
- Preheat oven to 150 degrees (my oven only went down to 170)
- Mix 1 cup applesauce and 1 cup cinnamon together. Then add 4 tablespoons of glue and mix well. If your dough is too runny to be rolled out add more cinnamon to get the right consistency.
- Once you can form the mixture into a dough ball, place it onto a sheet of wax paper. Press the ball down with another sheet of wax paper.
- With a rolling pin, roll out the dough between ¼ and ½ an inch thick. (I did ½ and inch) Remove the top sheet of wax paper and cut out shapes. (I used a heart shaped cookie cutter)
- Keep rolling and cutting until you don’t have any more dough.
- Add a small hole in each of the cutouts so you will have somewhere to attach a ribbon.
- Place on cookie sheet and bake at for 2 hours. (My oven won’t go below 170 so I used that temperature for 1 hour 45 minutes)
- After the 2 hours, turn the oven off and leave the pan in the oven for 5 to 6 hours. I left mine in overnight.
Tips:
*Best to remove the wax paper before cooking.
**If you take them out of the oven and they are still moist, let them set out on the counter until they are completely dry.
***Add your ribbon and presto a cinnamon applesauce ornament!

what a neat idea! how long can they be left out?
I've had mine hanging in the closets for about a month now and they still are quite strong. I guess the longevity would depend on the size of the cutout and the thickness. I'll update in another month or so. 🙂
I love the smell of the scented pinecones at Christmas time! I imagine these would be similar. It sounds like a great idea.

Oh yes, just like that. I am looking forward to making some for hanging on the Christmas tree. 🙂
Mmmm sounds like it would smell delicious! I have a gingerbread ornament for our Christmas tree that I made in grade school! It still smells like gingerbread! O.o

Wow! That's pretty amazing. I would think that you could change the spice in this recipe. Maybe I'll try another scent. 🙂
That is an awfully astounding column you’ve posted. Thanks a lot for that a fantastically amazing post!
