This May, in honor of Skin Cancer & Melanoma Prevention and Detection Month, Amazon launched its Summer Sun Care Storefront to help guide consumers to make well-informed sunscreen protection choices.
As the leading type of cancer in the United States, there are more new cases of skin cancer diagnosed than cases of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
That is why, new for 2016, Amazon is joining forces with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to help customers stay protected throughout the summer. From May 1st through August 31st, Amazon.com will be hosting a Summer Sun Care Event, featuring the top-rated sun care products and content on-site that will provide customers educational resources to learn how to SPOT® skin cancer, choose the right sunscreen and properly apply it, and where to find a free skin screening location in their community.
Amazon knows that SPF protection is important to health and beauty customers. Each year Amazon sees an increase in the SPF level of products purchased. Between 2014 and 2015, it rose 8% with the average SPF level purchased in 2015 being above 40! And it’s not just customers in warmer climates who are purchasing sunblock. In fact, Amazon customers in New York City purchased the most SPF over the past year, followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago and San Diego.
Another fun fact: lotion reigns supreme as the most popular type of SPF protection purchased in the past year (83%), but 12% of consumers are trying sprays followed by stick formulas and even powder.
Notably, customers who purchase sun care products during the Sun Care Event, can shop Amazon Smile and support their favorite charitable organization – Amazon will donate 0.5% of the purchase price for tens of millions of eligible items.
