How to Protect Your Hair from Hard Water
Guys, I have to talk about my hair situation. It has been really concerning me lately that my hair is brittle, hard to manage, and seems to fall out like it would postpartum. I really was getting freaked out like what is going on with my hair?! I have longer hair, past my shoulders and I do get it colored but not often and I don’t even wash it more than twice a week. It isn’t like I’m stressing my hair out with constant heat styling and wash. I often don’t even blow dry my hair unless its winter or I’m in a rush to get out of the house.
The more I started to research what could be the cause, including talking to my hair stylist, the culprit to this concerning hair situation is hands down the result of the hard water at my house. My hair was pretty amazing just five years ago in the photos I’ve looked back on, but year after year, it has become discolored and thin. I had even purchased a silk pillowcase thinking the cotton pillow covers where one of the reasons my hair was coming out! We moved into this house about five years ago this June. We have well water here and we don’t have a water softener on the well. We filter it a ton and keep it maintained, but we just never thought about the long term effects of hard water. The cost of a water softening system is into the thousands of dollars and not in the budget right now.
Basically hard water, over time can cause serious damage to your hair and skin. So you may not notice initially, but over time it will be very evident. Your hair can become dry, tangly, discolored and you may even have hair loss. Hard water contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. Those minerals make it harder for water to form a solution with soap, and it leaves behind a scummy residue. … Not only can soap scum from hard water clog your pores, many people find it also causes them to feel dry, itchy, and irritated. Hard water can also cause build up on the scalp, causing a dandruff-like condition to form.
I see it even with the laundry. The whites I wash separately and have to use a laundry booster because the whites will literally turn a grey color in just one wash. Colors fade pretty quickly too. I’ve never really had to deal with this before in all of the places we lived.
Well, once I figured out the problem I needed a solution. I spoke with my stylist at my last appointment and during my wash she gave my hair an OLAPLEX TREATMENT. This treatment makes my hair feel instantly transformed. Its not something you can buy and do at home, but you can ask your hair stylist about it. It is a three-step process that includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. You can use Olaplex to restore compromised hair, or add it to another service to provide the ultimate breakage insurance. We do this about every 6-8 weeks when I go in for a hair trim. Worth the extra appointment time and money!
I had to switch up my shampoo and condition for home. That was going to be the big next step in starting to turn my hair around. I had been looking online for different products specifically targeted for hard water hair care and found the MALIBU C HARD WATER WELLNESS COLLECTION. The shampoo and conditioner is designed to gently eliminate toxins and impurities and deliver a deep cleaning detox that effectively removes and repels damaging hard water mineral buildup for restored clarity and balance. In addition to the shampoo and conditioner you also get their WELLNESS REMEDY which you can only use once a week.
After the first wash, condition and treatment I was stunned how different my hair felt. I even dried my hair! I could easily comb through my hair right out of the shower without any tangles or much effort. My hair loss after washing is usually pretty frightening. And this time it wasn’t. Since my use of the MALIBU system for a month now I’ve seen a huge overall change in my hair thickness. I truly think it is starting to grow back! I can see where it was thiner and now there is growth especially around my temples.
To help give my hair another boost while trying to restore it I’ve also added COLLAGEN to my coffee each morning. I just felt that I wanted to tackle this situation in two ways. I add a scoop of the VITAL PROTEINS COLLAGEN PEPTIDES to my hot coffee each morning and get a boost of collagen for my hair, skin and nails. I prefer it to taking a pill supplement too and its great for your bones and joint health as well. I’m going to be FOURTY in less than five months so anything I can do to feel better inside and out I’m willing to try – so long as its safe!
If you are dealing with hard water hair problems there are a variety of ways to tackle it. You can try an at home remedy like mixing 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar to 1 quart distilled water. Shampoo your hair and rinse well as you would normally do and then apply the apple cider mixture leaving on for a few seconds before rinsing with cold water. You can also just avoid the hard water on your hair altogether and wash and rinse with bottled or filtered water. I guess it would be best to wash your hair in the sink if you try this method.
